Function and Principle of Optical Couplers

Function and Principle of Optical Couplers

Optical couplers transfer or split signals using light, either between optical fibers or across electrically isolated circuits, based on principles of light propagation and photoelectric conversion.Fiber Optic CouplersFiber optic couplers are devices that distribute or combine optical signals between two or more fibers. They operate on the principles of refraction, reflection, and interference of light within the fiber cores . Common types include:Fused Biconical Taper (FBT) Couplers: Two or more fibers are heated and stretched until their cores fuse, allowing light from one fiber to split into the others .Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) Couplers: Use an optical splitter chip to divide light evenly across multiple outputs, offering compact size and uniform splitting .Wavelength Division Multiplexers (WDM): Combine or separate light of different wavelengths, enabling multiplexing and demultiplexing in communication systems . In operation, the input light is coupled into the output fibers with minimal loss. The design, such as the Y-shaped branch in waveguide couplers, ensures efficient light transfer while controlling excess loss due to leakage into the cladding . Directional couplers are designed so that light entering an input port is transferred primarily to output ports, with high return loss to prevent back-reflection .Optocouplers (Opto-Isolators)Optocouplers transfer electrical signals between two electrically isolated circuits using light as the medium . The basic structure includes:Light Source (LED): Converts the input electrical signal into infrared light. The intensity of emitted light is proportional to the input current .Light Detector (Phototransistor, Photo-SCR, or Photo-Triac): Receives the light and converts it back into an electrical signal, switching or modulating the output circuit accordingly . The input and output are electrically isolated, often up to several kilovolts, preventing high-voltage interference from affecting sensitive circuits. The current-transfer ratio (CTR) defines the efficiency of signal transfer, representing the ratio of output current to input LED current . Optocouplers are widely used in isolated power supplies, microcontroller interfaces, and communication systems.SummaryOptical couplers, whether in fiber optics or electronic circuits, rely on light as a medium to transfer, split, or isolate signals. Fiber optic couplers manage the flow of light between fibers for data transmission, while optocouplers provide electrical isolation and safe signal transfer between circuits. Both types are essential in modern communication and electronic systems for signal distribution, multiplexing, and protection.
