Phase diagram of relay protection

Phase diagram of relay protection

A phase diagram of relay protection illustrates how phase failure, phase sequence, and phase reversal relays monitor three-phase systems and control contactors to protect motors and equipment.Overview of Phase Protection RelaysPhase protection relays are designed to monitor three-phase electrical systems for abnormal conditions such as:Phase loss (single-phasing), where one phase is missing, which can cause motors to overheat and draw excessive current .Phase sequence errors, where the order of phases (L1-L2-L3) is incorrect, potentially causing motors to rotate in reverse .Phase reversal, which can damage equipment if the rotational direction of motors is reversed .Voltage irregularities, including under-voltage and over-voltage conditions . These relays typically have adjustable ON-delay and OFF-delay timers to prevent nuisance tripping during transient disturbances.Functional RepresentationIn a phase diagram, the relay is connected to the three-phase supply (L1, L2, L3) and monitors:Voltage presence on each phase.Phase sequence to ensure correct rotation.Phase loss or imbalance. When all phases are normal, the relay activates its output contacts, allowing the contactor to close and supply power to the motor. If a fault occurs, the relay de-energizes, opening the contactor and disconnecting the load to prevent damage .Typical Wiring DiagramA standard phase protection diagram includes:Three-phase input connected to the relay terminals.Relay output contacts wired to a magnetic contactor coil.Overload relay in series with the motor for thermal protection.Push buttons (start/stop) for manual control.Indicator lights showing normal or fault conditions . The diagram shows the interconnection of the relay, contactor, overload relay, and motor, highlighting how the relay trips the contactor in case of phase failure or sequence errors. This ensures double protection: the overload relay protects against overcurrent, while the phase relay prevents single-phasing or reverse rotation damage.Practical ImplementationPhase failure relay (PF): Trips immediately if any phase is missing, cutting off the contactor coil current .Phase sequence relay: Monitors the order of phases and trips the contactor if the sequence is incorrect .Phase reversal protection: Ensures motors operate in the correct direction by using two contactors to correct phase order if needed . By combining these relays in a phase protection panel, engineers can safeguard three-phase motors and equipment from electrical faults, ensuring safe and reliable operation.
