Fiber Optic Sensor Detection and Setting Method

Fiber Optic Sensor Detection and Setting Method

Fiber optic sensors are set up by proper installation, calibration, and sensitivity adjustment using adhesives, tapes, or embedment techniques depending on the application.Installation MethodsSurface Installation with Adhesives: This is the most common method for high-accuracy applications. The surface should be cleaned, abraded, and conditioned before applying adhesives such as M-Bond 200 or AE-10. After curing, a protective layer like RTV silicone is recommended to shield the fiber and adhesive from environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and mechanical stress . Surface Installation with Tape: For temporary or non-critical applications, double-sided tape can be used to fix the fiber to the surface. While easier to apply, tape installations are less reliable and may peel off under environmental stress . Embedment in Materials: In civil engineering or structural monitoring, fibers can be embedded in concrete or composite materials. This method provides robust protection and allows distributed sensing along the embedded fiber .Sensor Calibration and SettingInitialization: Many fiber optic sensors require initialization to set reference light intensity. For example, pressing and holding the and buttons simultaneously allows selection of "rSt" and "init" modes, which calibrates the sensor to a baseline value slightly higher than the received light intensity. This compensates for dust or dirt accumulation . Sensitivity Adjustment: Sensitivity can be automatically set while passing the workpiece through the sensor, ensuring accurate detection without stopping production. The current value can be adjusted to "100.0" to standardize readings and reduce variation due to individual sensor differences . Reference and Preset Functions: Reflective models can use the background as a reference, setting the reference condition to "0.0" and the detection condition to "100.0". This ensures reliable detection even in varying environmental conditions .Practical TipsEnsure the fiber is not bent beyond its minimum bend radius to prevent signal loss.Use protective coatings or housings in harsh environments to prevent mechanical damage.Verify calibration after installation and periodically during operation to maintain measurement accuracy. For distributed sensing, ensure proper spacing and alignment of sensing points to achieve high-resolution measurements . By following these installation and setting methods, fiber optic sensors can provide accurate, reliable, and long-term performance across a wide range of industrial and structural applications .
