Mechanical vibrations in fiber optic cables induce phase-modulated (PM) noise, which can degrade high-precision systems like opto-electronic oscillators, but this can be mitigated through spool design, mounting techniques, and active noise control.How Vibration Affects PM NoiseVibration causes mechanical distortions in the optical fiber, leading to time-delay fluctuations that manifest as phase-modulated noise in the transmitted signal. In systems like opto-electronic oscillators (OEOs), which rely on long optical fibers for high-Q resonance, even small environmental vibrations can significantly increase PM noise at offset frequencies from a few hertz to 1 kHz, reducing the oscillator's spectral purity and overall performance . The fiber spool is a primary contributor, as its material and mounting determine how vibrations are transmitted to the fiber .Spool Materials and Mounting TechniquesStudies have compared spools made of metal, ceramic, plastic, and foam-covered plastic. Foam-covered spools and careful winding techniques can reduce vibration sensitivity by damping mechanical resonances . Proper mounting, such as using isolation chambers or shock mounts, can further minimize vibration transmission, although passive methods alone may not fully suppress discrete vibration-induced spectral lines .Active Noise ControlActive vibration suppression involves sensing vibrations with accelerometers and electronically compensating for the induced phase fluctuations.
