An optical transmitter primarily consists of a light source (laser diode), an optical modulator, driver circuitry, and optical subassemblies that convert electrical signals into modulated light for transmission.Light Source: Laser DiodeThe laser diode is the heart of an optical transmitter, generating the optical carrier signal. Common types include:DFB (Distributed Feedback) Laser: Offers precise wavelength stability, ideal for long-distance, high-precision transmissions.VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser): Compact and cost-effective, suitable for short-range, high-speed applications like data centers.DML (Direct Modulation Laser): Easy to integrate, used in medium-speed, small form-factor modules. The choice of laser affects modulation speed, output power, wavelength accuracy, and thermal stability .Optical ModulatorThe optical modulator encodes the electrical data onto the light wave. There are two main approaches:Direct Modulation: Varies the laser drive current to encode data; simpler but can introduce signal distortion at high speeds.External Modulation: Uses a separate device, such as a Mach-Zehnder Modulator, to modulate continuous light, providing higher signal fidelity and lower jitter, essential for long-haul and coherent systems .Driver CircuitryThe driver circuit processes the input electrical signal and controls the laser diode or modulator.
