Optical Cable Anti-corrosion Coating

Optical Cable Anti-corrosion Coating

Anti-corrosion coatings for optical cables protect fibers from environmental damage, mechanical wear, and electrochemical degradation, ensuring long-term reliability in harsh conditions.Types of Anti-Corrosion Coatings1. Copolymer-Coated Steel Armor: Armored optical cables often use copolymer-coated steel tape to resist corrosion and rodent damage. Field studies and long-term burial tests have shown that minor pitting occurs only where the coating is removed, and corrosion does not migrate under intact coatings. This type of armor balances mechanical protection, corrosion resistance, and lightning safety, making it suitable for outdoor and direct-burial applications (Corning Optical Communications) . 2. UV-Curable Acrylate Coatings: For the fiber itself, UV-curable dual-layer acrylate coatings provide high-temperature resistance and mechanical durability. These coatings are designed to withstand fast fiber drawing speeds while maintaining thermal stability and mechanical integrity, making them ideal for specialty applications such as aerospace, automotive, and high-power optical systems . 3. Nano-Coatings for ADSS Cables: ADSS (All-Dielectric Self-Supporting) cables are vulnerable to electrocorrosion near high-voltage conductors. Advanced FD-X90 inorganic nano-coatings offer multi-layer protection, including waterproofing, self-cleaning, oxidation resistance, hyper-insulation, and extreme heat resistance (>1000℃). Field tests on high-voltage towers demonstrated zero corrosion after severe weather events, proving their effectiveness in critical infrastructure . 4. Marine and Harsh Environment Coatings: Cables for marine or high-salinity environments often use PE-sheathed steel tapes or fully dielectric designs. These coatings comply with standards like IEC 60794-1-2 E14 (Salt Spray Test) and provide UV protection, crush resistance, and durability for both indoor and outdoor installations .Key ConsiderationsMechanical Protection: Armor coatings must resist rodent attacks, crushing, and installation damage. Double-armored designs enhance protection in high-risk areas .Environmental Resistance: Coatings should prevent corrosion from moisture, salt, and chemical exposure, and maintain performance under temperature extremes .Electrical Safety: For ADSS cables, coatings must minimize leakage currents and prevent arcing near high-voltage lines .Standards Compliance: Many anti-corrosion coatings meet IEC, UL, and RoHS standards, ensuring safety and reliability in industrial and outdoor applications .ApplicationsAnti-corrosion optical cables are widely used in:Outdoor and direct-burial networksHigh-voltage power line communicationsMarine and offshore installationsIndustrial and harsh environment networksSpecialty applications such as aerospace, automotive, and high-power lasers By selecting the appropriate coating type—copolymer armor, UV-curable acrylate, or nano-coating—fiber optic cables can achieve long-term durability, mechanical resilience, and resistance to corrosion and environmental degradation.
