Parameters of optical fibers and cables

Parameters of optical fibers and cables

Optical fiber cables are characterized by geometric, optical, and transmission parameters that determine their performance in communication systems.Geometric ParametersCore Diameter: The central region through which light propagates. Multi-mode fibers typically have 50–62.5 µm cores, while single-mode fibers have ~8–10 µm cores .Cladding Diameter: Surrounds the core, usually 125 µm, with a slightly lower refractive index to confine light via total internal reflection .Coating and Sheath: Protective layers (acrylate, polyethylene) reduce microbending, mechanical stress, and environmental damage .Optical ParametersNumerical Aperture (NA): Determines the light acceptance angle and coupling efficiency. Higher NA allows more light to enter the fiber.Refractive Index Profile: Core has a higher refractive index than cladding; can be step-index or graded-index, affecting mode propagation .Modes: Single-mode fibers support one guided mode, while multi-mode fibers support multiple modes, influencing bandwidth and dispersion .Transmission ParametersAttenuation (Loss Coefficient): Power loss per kilometer, measured in dB/km. Typical low-loss single-mode fibers have ≤0.18 dB/km at 1550 nm . Losses arise from absorption (impurities, OH⁻ ions), scattering (Rayleigh scattering), and bending .Dispersion: Causes pulse broadening, limiting bandwidth and distance. Includes chromatic dispersion (wavelength-dependent) and modal dispersion (multi-mode fibers), .Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD): Variation in propagation speed for different polarization states, relevant for high-speed systems .Interconnection Loss: Losses at splices and connectors due to core misalignment, end-face quality, or hardware tolerances .Bending Losses: Microbends (small-scale deflections) and macrobends (large loops) can cause light to escape the core, increasing attenuation .Environmental and Mechanical ConsiderationsTemperature and Humidity Tolerance: Fibers are designed to maintain performance under varying environmental conditions.Strength Members: Steel or Kevlar strands in cables provide tensile strength and protect fibers from mechanical stress . These parameters collectively define the performance, maximum transmission distance, and bandwidth of optical fiber cables, and are critical for designing reliable fiber-optic communication systems.
