Fiber Optics in Sensing

Fiber optic sensing uses optical fibers as sensors to detect changes in temperature, strain, vibration, and other environmental parameters along the fiber's length.OverviewFiber optic sensing (FOS) is a technology that transforms an optical fiber into a continuous sensor. Light traveling through the fiber interacts with its environment, and any changes in temperature, strain, vibration, or pressure alter the light's properties, such as intensity, phase, wavelength, or polarization, which are then detected by specialized instruments . This allows the fiber itself to act as a distributed sensor, providing thousands of sensing points along its length.How It WorksOptical fibers are thin strands of glass or plastic that guide light through total internal reflection. When the fiber experiences environmental changes, the light's behavior is slightly modified. These changes are measured using opto-electronic interrogators or detectors, which convert the optical signals into electronic data for analysis .
