Dissolution Process of Drop Fiber Optic Cable

The dissolution process of drop fiber optic cables involves careful preparation, stripping, cleaning, cleaving, and termination or splicing to ensure optimal signal transmission and mechanical integrity.Safety and PreparationBefore starting, always wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses and gloves, and work in a well-ventilated area if using solvents. Never look directly into the fiber ends, as laser light can cause serious eye damage. Ensure the work area is clean, well-lit, and free from dust or debris, and inspect the cable for any kinks or defects before proceeding .Step 1: Determine Cable Length and MarkingMeasure the required length of fiber and tube needed for splicing or termination according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Mark the cable to indicate the end to be accessed, leaving enough subunit length to route from the messenger attachment point to the closure .Step 2: Identify SubunitsSeparate the fiber subunit (usually printed) from the messenger subunit. The fiber subunit contains the optical fibers, while the messenger provides mechanical strength .Step 3: Web SlittingAt approximately 12 inches from the cable end, cut a small hole through the web using a utility knife. Tilt the knife slightly toward the messenger subunit to avoid damaging the fiber subunit. Use a cable slitter, such as the Benner-Nawman UP-B36, to carefully slit the web and expose the fiber subunit .Step 4: Stripping the FiberUse a fiber optic cable stripper to remove the protective coating from the fiber. Adjust the stripper blade depth according to the cable diameter. Clean the stripped fiber with alcohol wipes or a suitable cleaning solution to remove debris and residue .Step 5: Cleaving the FiberUse a fiber optic cleaver to create a clean, perpendicular end face on the stripped fiber. Proper cleaving ensures minimal signal loss and optimal splicing or connectorization. Inspect the cleaved fiber with a microscope or visual fault locator to confirm smoothness and absence of defects .Step 6: Termination or SplicingChoose the appropriate method based on application:Connector Termination: Insert the cleaved fiber into a connector (SC, LC, ST, FC, etc.) using epoxy or mechanical means. This allows plug-and-play connections for patch panels or equipment interfaces .Fusion Splicing: Use a fusion splicer to permanently join two fiber ends. This method provides the lowest loss and highest reliability, ideal for long-haul or high-bandwidth connections .Step 7: Securing the MessengerAttach the messenger subunit to approved hardware, such as WIREVISE® clamps for aerial installations. Mark the attachment point and separate the messenger 8 inches on either side using a utility knife, tilting the blade away from the fiber subunit to prevent damage .Step 8: Final InspectionAfter termination or splicing, inspect the fiber end and connections to ensure proper alignment, minimal signal loss, and mechanical stability. Repeat the process for each fiber within the cable if multiple fibers are present . By following these steps carefully, drop fiber optic cables can be safely dissolved, prepared, and terminated for reliable network performance with minimal signal loss and mechanical stress.
