How to connect the heat shrink tubing for fiber optic heating

How to connect the heat shrink tubing for fiber optic heating

To connect heat shrink tubing for fiber optic applications, slide the tubing over the fiber, align the fiber in the connector or splice, and use controlled heat to shrink the tubing securely around the fiber.Step-by-Step Procedure1. Prepare the FiberCleave the fiber to the correct length and ensure the end face is clean and free of debris.Handle the fiber carefully to avoid bending beyond its minimum radius or causing kinks, which can affect transmission performance . 2. Slide the Heat Shrink TubingPlace the heat shrink tubing over the fiber before inserting it into the connector or splice protector .Ensure the tubing is positioned so that it will cover the joint or splice completely once shrunk. 3. Insert the FiberInsert the cleaved fiber into the connector ferrule or splice protector, making sure the fiber core aligns with the center of the ferrule or adhesive area .For splices, ensure the fiber ends are properly aligned in the splice tray or fusion splicer. 4. Apply HeatUse a heat gun or a fusion splicer oven to shrink the tubing. Modern splice ovens can heat tubing at temperatures up to 240°C in 10–25 seconds depending on the sleeve type .Older ovens may require lower temperatures (around 125°C) for longer durations (about 60 seconds) to allow the adhesive inside the tubing to flow and secure the fiber properly .Heat evenly to avoid damaging the fiber or connector. 5. Verify and ProtectAfter shrinking, inspect the tubing to ensure it has fully contracted and the adhesive has flowed around the fiber joint.Clean the connector end face with lint-free wipes and isopropyl alcohol before testing.Test the fiber connection using a power meter and light source to verify optical loss and signal quality .If necessary, cover the terminated end with a dust cap for protection. 6. Adjust for EquipmentAlways refer to the specific splice oven or heat gun manual for pre-set temperatures and cycle times, as different manufacturers and tubing types may require adjustments .Adjust one parameter at a time to achieve optimal shrink and adhesive flow. By following these steps, heat shrink tubing can be securely connected to fiber optic cables, providing mechanical protection, environmental sealing, and reliable optical performance .
