Accurate optical power measurements require proper wavelength selection, connector cleaning, calibration, and careful handling of the fiber under test.Basic Operating StepsPower On and Warm-Up: Turn on the optical power meter and allow it to stabilize for a minute or two to ensure reliable readings . Ensure the device is fully charged or connected to a power source .Wavelength Selection: Set the meter to the wavelength of the optical signal being measured. Mismatched wavelengths can lead to inaccurate readings .Connector Cleaning: Clean all fiber connectors and mating adapters using appropriate tools, such as one-click cleaners for LC, SC, or ST connectors. Connector contamination is the most common source of measurement error .Zeroing the Meter: Cover the sensor and press the zero or null button to ensure the meter reads zero when no light is present .Connecting the Fiber: Carefully connect the fiber under test to the meter's input port. Avoid bending or stressing the fiber, which can affect readings .Reference Measurement (for Relative Power): If measuring insertion loss, connect a reference patch cord to the source and set the current power as the reference using the REF key. This allows the meter to display relative power in dB .Reading and Recording: Observe the displayed power in dBm or mW. Some meters allow data logging to a computer or internal memory for record-keeping .Maintenance and CalibrationRegular Cleaning: Clean the sensor and input ports with isopropyl alcohol and lint-free wipes to remove dust and contaminants .Calibration: Ensure the meter is calibrated according to the manufacturer's schedule, typically annually.
