The light travels through the fiber core and escapes at points of fault, such as breaks, sharp bends, or poorly spliced connectors, making the fault visible to the technician . Key steps include:Prepare the Fiber: Clean the fiber ends and VFL connector to ensure accurate results. Use safety glasses if necessary .Connect the VFL: Plug the VFL into one end of the fiber cable using the appropriate connector adapter (SC, LC, FC, or ST). For bare fibers, a fiber adapter or direct contact can be used .Activate the VFL: Turn on the device and observe the fiber. Light leakage indicates a fault, while no light at the far end may suggest a break or poor connection .Inspect the Cable: Walk along the cable route, paying attention to areas where the red glow appears or fades. Faults may include microbends, macro bends, or connector misalignments .Confirm Continuity: If possible, check both ends of the fiber to verify continuity and pinpoint the exact fault location .Complementary TechniquesFor longer fiber runs or more precise fault location, a VFL can be used alongside an OTDR. The OTDR measures the distance to the fault with high accuracy, while tools like a Cold Clamp provide a local reference marker for physical measurement on the ground .
