Relays do not interrupt current directly; they rely on current transformers (CTs) to measure line current and provide a scaled-down signal suitable for the relay . The relay then decides whether the current exceeds its pickup setting, which is the threshold above which the relay operates .Overcurrent ProtectionOvercurrent relays are a common type of protective relay used to detect excessive current flow. They are designed to respond when the current exceeds a preset value, either instantaneously or with a time delay . The two main types are:Instantaneous overcurrent relays (50): Act immediately when current exceeds the set limit, suitable for short-circuit protection.Time overcurrent relays (51): Provide a time delay that decreases as current increases, allowing coordination with upstream and downstream devices to ensure selective tripping . The protection current is the current at which the relay initiates a trip signal. It is determined by the relay's pickup setting and the CT ratio. For example, a CT with a 600:5 ratio converts 600 A of line current to 5 A for the relay input. The relay will trip when the secondary current reaches the pickup value, which corresponds to a specific primary current .Components Affecting Relay OperationThe performance of a relay depends on several factors:CT/PT inputs: Accurate measurement of current and voltage.Relay settings: Pickup current and time delay.Breaker clearing time: The speed at which the breaker interrupts the fault.Coordination: Ensuring upstream and downstream relays operate selectively to isolate only the faulted section .Practical ApplicationIn a motor protection scenario, if a motor rated at 15 A draws 20 A due to overload, the overcurrent relay detects the excess 5 A and trips the motor starter to prevent overheating .
