Optical modules RX and TX

Optical modules RX and TX

TX (transmit) power is the optical signal strength sent by a module, while RX (receive) power is the signal strength detected by the receiving module, both critical for reliable fiber-optic communication.Understanding TX PowerTX power refers to the intensity of the optical signal emitted by the transmitting end of an optical module, such as an SFP or QSFP transceiver. It is usually expressed in dBm (decibel-milliwatts) or milliwatts (mW) and represents the average optical power under normal operating conditions. The transmitted power depends on the data pattern, with more “1”s in the signal producing higher optical power. Maintaining TX power within the specified range is essential to ensure the signal can travel the intended distance without overloading the receiver or causing signal degradation .Understanding RX PowerRX power is the optical power level received by the module at the far end of the fiber link. It is also measured in dBm and must fall within the receiver's sensitivity range to be correctly interpreted. The upper limit of RX power is called the overload power, while the lower limit is the receiver sensitivity. Signals below the sensitivity threshold may not be detected, causing data loss, while signals above the overload limit can damage the receiver or cause errors .Typical TX/RX RangesSingle-mode fiber (SMF):1310 nm (LX modules): TX -5 to 0 dBm, RX down to -14 dBm, distances 10–15 km1550 nm (ZX modules): TX 0 to +5 dBm, RX down to -24 dBm, distances 40–80+ kmMulti-mode fiber (MMF):850 nm (SX modules): TX -9 to -3 dBm, RX down to -17 dBm, distances up to 550 m1300 nm: TX -5 to -1 dBm, RX down to -14 dBm, distances up to 2 km Optical Power BudgetThe optical power budget is the difference between the minimum TX power and the receiver sensitivity. It represents the maximum allowable signal loss in the fiber link and helps determine the feasible transmission distance. For example, a module with TX 0–5 dBm and RX sensitivity -20.9 dBm has an optical power budget of 20.9 dB, which can support a theoretical distance of 83 km over standard single-mode fiber at 1550 nm .Practical ConsiderationsAlways ensure TX power does not exceed the RX overload limit to prevent damage.Use optical attenuators on short links if TX is too high.Clean fiber connectors to avoid signal loss; even a small dust particle can cause 3 dB or more attenuation.Monitor TX and RX values via Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM) to detect abnormal module operation and prevent network interruptions . Understanding and managing TX and RX power is crucial for designing reliable optical networks, ensuring signal integrity, and achieving the desired transmission distances.
