An OLT manages end-user access in a PON network, converting and controlling optical signals, while an Optical Cross-Connect (OXC) box routes and switches optical signals at the core network level without converting them to electrical signals.Optical Line Terminal (OLT)Function and Role: The OLT is the central control unit of a Passive Optical Network (PON), located at the service provider's central office. It converts electrical signals from the provider's backbone into optical signals for distribution to multiple end-users via optical fibers and splitters, and manages upstream traffic from Optical Network Units (ONUs) or Terminals (ONTs) . Key Features:Performs signal conversion between electrical and optical domains.Coordinates multiplexing and bandwidth allocation for multiple ONUs/ONTs.Supports PON standards such as GPON, XGS-PON, and EPON.Handles burst-mode reception to manage multiple end-user signals over a shared fiber.Typically located in the central office or ISP equipment room .
