What is multimode optical fiber

What is multimode optical fiber

A multimode optical fiber (MMF) is an optical fiber with a larger core that allows multiple light modes to propagate simultaneously, ideal for short- to medium-distance data transmission.OverviewMultimode optical fiber is designed with a larger core diameter, typically 50–100 micrometers, which enables multiple light modes to travel through the fiber at the same time . This design simplifies alignment and installation, making MMF cost-effective and suitable for short-distance communication, such as within buildings, campuses, or data centers . Unlike single-mode fiber, which carries only one light mode, multimode fiber experiences modal dispersion, which limits its maximum transmission distance .Data Transmission and PerformanceMMF supports high data rates, up to 100 Gbps, over distances typically ranging from 300 to 550 meters, depending on the fiber type (OM3, OM4, OM5), . It can use lower-cost light sources such as LEDs or VCSELs (vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers), reducing overall system costs while maintaining reliable performance . MMF is commonly used for backbone connections in buildings, data centers, and enterprise networks.Types of Multimode FiberMultimode fibers are classified according to the ISO/IEC 11801 standard into OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4, and OM5 types :OM1: Core diameter 62.5 µm, supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet up to 33 meters, typically uses LED light sources.OM2: Core diameter 50 µm, supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet up to 82 meters, also LED-based.OM3: 50 µm core, optimized for laser-based equipment, supports 10 Gbps up to 300 meters and 40/100 Gbps up to 100 meters.OM4: Backwards compatible with OM3, supports 10 Gbps up to 550 meters, designed for VCSEL lasers.OM5: Supports wideband multimode transmission for multiple wavelengths, suitable for high-speed, short-range applications.ApplicationsMultimode fiber is widely used for:Short-range high-speed networking in data centers and enterprise LANs.Backbone cabling within buildings or campuses.Fiber-to-the-desk or fiber-to-the-zone deployments.High optical power applications, such as laser welding or spectroscopy equipment .Advantages and LimitationsAdvantages:Easier to install and align due to larger core.Lower-cost transceivers and light sources.High capacity for short-distance communication. Limitations:Limited transmission distance due to modal dispersion.Less suitable for long-haul communication compared to single-mode fiber. In summary, multimode optical fiber is a cost-effective, high-capacity solution for short- to medium-distance optical communication, with multiple types optimized for different speeds and distances, making it ideal for modern enterprise and data center networks .
