What are the structural components of a communication optical cable

What are the structural components of a communication optical cable

A fiber optic cable consists of a core, cladding, coating, strength members, and an outer sheath, each designed to ensure efficient light transmission, mechanical protection, and environmental resilience.CoreThe core is the central part of the optical cable where light signals propagate. It is typically made of ultra-pure silica glass (SiO₂) or, in some cases, plastic, and its diameter varies depending on the fiber type: single-mode fibers have a core of about 8–10 µm, while multimode fibers range from 50–62.5 µm . The core's refractive index is higher than the surrounding cladding, enabling total internal reflection for efficient long-distance data transmission .CladdingSurrounding the core is the cladding, made of similar materials with a slightly lower refractive index. Its primary function is to contain the light within the core and prevent signal loss . The cladding also provides a smooth interface for the core, enhancing optical performance.CoatingThe coating is a protective plastic layer applied over the cladding to prevent physical damage during handling and installation. Common coatings include acrylate, which is UV-curable, flexible, and temperature-resistant. Some cables use dual-layer coatings for added protection . The coating does not affect optical performance but is critical for mechanical durability.Strength MembersTo protect the fragile fiber from tension, crushing, or bending, cables include strength members. These are often made of aramid yarn (Kevlar®), fiberglass rods, or steel wires in armored cables. Strength members can be placed centrally or around the periphery of the cable, depending on design standards and regional practices . They ensure the fiber maintains performance under mechanical stress.Outer Sheath and ArmorThe outer sheath provides environmental protection, including resistance to moisture, UV, and chemical exposure. Materials include polyethylene (PE) for outdoor use, PVC for indoor flexibility, and LSZH for fire safety . For direct burial or harsh environments, cables may include armor layers such as steel tape, stainless steel, or nylon to prevent physical damage and corrosion . Some cables are oil-filled to prevent moisture ingress and reduce maintenance needs.Additional FeaturesRipcords: Nylon or polyester cords inside the jacket facilitate easy removal of the sheath for splicing or termination .Cable Core Structures: Variants include layer-twisted, skeleton, belt, or central beam tube types, which influence fiber placement and mechanical stability . These components work together to ensure that optical cables can transmit data efficiently while withstanding environmental and mechanical stresses, making them suitable for indoor, outdoor, and long-distance telecommunications applications.
