What devices are used for FTTH and GPON

FTTH and GPON networks rely on four main devices: Optical Line Terminal (OLT), Optical Network Unit/Terminal (ONU/ONT), Optical Distribution Network (ODN), and optical splitters.Key Devices1. Optical Line Terminal (OLT) The OLT is located at the service provider's central office and serves as the central hub of the network. It converts electrical signals from the provider's core network into optical signals for transmission over fiber. The OLT also manages traffic, coordinates upstream and downstream bandwidth, and connects to multiple end-users through the optical distribution network . 2. Optical Network Unit (ONU) / Optical Network Terminal (ONT) These devices are installed at the subscriber's premises. They convert optical signals back into electrical signals for use by computers, phones, or other devices. While ONT is typically used for single-premises connections, ONU can serve multiple users in some configurations. Both provide encryption and interface with the user's local network . 3. Optical Distribution Network (ODN) The ODN is the passive fiber infrastructure connecting the OLT to ONUs/ONTs. It consists of optical fibers, connectors, and splitters. The ODN carries optical signals without requiring power, making it cost-effective and low-maintenance . 4. Optical Splitters Splitters are passive devices that divide a single optical signal from the OLT into multiple signals to serve several end-users. Common split ratios include 1:4, 1:8, 1:16, 1:32, and 1:64. Splitters enable a point-to-multipoint topology, reducing the amount of fiber and central office equipment needed .Optional and Supporting DevicesWavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) modules: Used in GPON to transmit multiple wavelengths over the same fiber, allowing simultaneous upstream and downstream communication .Amplifiers: Occasionally used to boost signal strength over long distances in the ODN .Modems or routers at the user premises: Convert optical signals to Ethernet for local network connectivity .SummaryIn FTTH and GPON networks, the OLT acts as the central controller, the ODN and splitters passively distribute signals, and the ONU/ONT terminates the fiber at the user's premises.
